LaRae's new album, Kelly Hill, is a mix of contemporary and traditional sounds. It pairs hand drums and drum sets, cedar flute and baritone sax, English and Salish lyrics in a visionary blending of musical and personal influences.
Kelly Hill, the place, is a rolling mountain that cradles the Kettle River as it joins the Columbia River in Northeastern Washington State. On the mountain's side is the Pia Mission, site of turn of the century mission church and cemetery. From that beautiful and spiritual place, LaRae has drawn inspiration for fourteen songs.
The title cut tells a mournful story of devotion that endures beyond time, while the opening track, Kwik qs xemencm, uses English and Interior Salish, the language of the Lakes, Spokanes, and Kalispels, to wonder at the mysteries of love.
Other tunes range from the sultry jazz ballad, Candle, to the upbeat, radio-ready, The Best Things in Life.
